Tale

Helen embarks on a passionate affair with a man who has no idea what her secret identity is. Caught in the crosshairs when her lover falls victim to London’s dangerous underworld, Helen’s employer calls in Sam to protect her. Bingo, the owner of the guitar shop where Sam gets his guns, is played by Rat Scabies, a member of the classic punk band The Damned.

This 6-part Netflix spy thriller promised much, but ultimately fell short of everything it could have

Fairy Tale of New York Written by Jem Finer, Shane MacGowan Starring The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl. With an A-list cast, including Keira Knightley as a gun-toting, ninja-kicking action heroine and Ben Whishaw as her former mentor and now colleague, expectations were high. Both are agents of the secret mercenary spy organisation called the Black Doves, whose handler is Sarah Lancashire, doing her best Judi Dench “M” impression in a hideous platinum blonde wig.

The trio were working together, but alone, trying to expose a vast conspiracy

It certainly starts off with a bang as we see three young men murdered in central London. There is a separate plot centred on the off-screen death of the Chinese ambassador to Britain, whose daughter, who holds a central position in the party, has also untimely disappeared, threatening all sorts of international political conflict. It’s no great surprise to see these two developments converge later on, both stories overlapping with the activities of Knightley and Whishaw, not least because she, as well as being married to the Government’s Defence Minister, was caught up in the political fallout over the ambassador’s death, also having a passionate affair with one of the three murdered at the start.

All resolved at the end, I felt it had fallen somewhere between James Bond-type fantasy and Le Carré-type realism, with escapism unfortunately winning out in the end

Various other characters are brought into the kaleidoscopic narrative, as Knightley and Whishaw are drawn deeper and deeper into an increasingly inscrutable plot as a body count piles up around them in mountainous proportions, occasionally at their hands, while Whishaw still has time to rekindle an old romance. Sharply directed and with credible performances by its A-list stars, for me it somewhat failed to live up to its initial promise, flying into an overstuffed plot that relied too much on coincidence, gunplay violence and quirky, offbeat characters. When I first started watching it, I was inclined, almost for the first time, to binge-watch all the remaining episodes — it seemed so good — but by episode 4, I fear the cracks were showing, for which no amount of sharp dialogue and quick-fire banter could make up for (and there were some good ones in there).

It picked up again for a tense and thrilling finale, even if it relied heavily on exposition and didn’t seem to know when to stop. It eventually did, though, and even did so with a “Die Hard”-style Christmas tie-in, but ultimately it all felt a bit too contrived, convoluted, and confusing to really work for me. “One Hundred Years of Solitude” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
